Indonesia Says It Seeks to Complete US Trade Talks in 60 Days

Indonesia and the US agreed to try to complete negotiations on trade and investment partnerships in 60 days, Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said, as the Southeast Asian nation seeks to avert higher tariffs on its exports to the world’s biggest economy.

Indonesia expects 20 of its main exports to the US, including textiles, furniture and shrimp, can be given balanced tariffs no higher than competitor countries, Hartarto said in an online briefing from the US on Friday morning, Jakarta time.

In turn, Indonesia is offering cooperation in access to critical minerals, along with simplified procedures on imports of horticultural products from the US. It has also asked the US to deepen cooperation on trade, investment, energy, finance, defense and education, and submitted documents to respond to the US on non-tariff issues, he said.

Hartarto and other officials are visiting the US to avert a threatened 32% tariff that has since been suspended by President Donald Trump until July.

Hartarto reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to buying more LPG, crude oil and gasoline from the US, and its plans to keep buying wheat, soybean and soybean meal from US as well as “capital goods.”

Indonesia’s delegation is set to meet US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent next week.
